I love the freedom that comes with being able to create– whether it’s creating a new piece of clothing, or a piece of art, or a garden. When you create, you’re no longer bound by another’s vision. The only limit is your own imagination, creativity and resourcefulness.
For as far back as I can remember, I have been a dreamer and a maker. As a small child I was a bit of a magpie, gathering up beautiful bits and saving them to create something beautiful. I suppose I come by this naturally– my mom, grandmother, aunts, cousins, were makers and crafters. Some of my earliest memories are of going to quilting bees with my grandmother, Hattie, and helping my mom, Rose, to pick fabrics for sewing projects. I learned to sew and quilt from these two resourceful women, and thus began my appreciation for beautiful handwork, and my love of beautiful patterns and color.
For me, having the chance to learn a new skill or art technique means greater freedom to express myself. I’m always eager to discover a new tool, and then to find creative ways to utilize it. As providence would have it, a few years ago this led to my discovering the world of surface pattern design. As soon as I realized that this would allow me to create my own fabrics and papers I knew that I had found “my thing”. Since then, I spend every minute I can observing the world around me for new pattern inspiration, sketching, painting and working digitally to create new patterns and illustrations. I’m drawn to happy, exuberant colors and designs that express my appreciation for the beauty that surrounds us each day, and for living such a blessed life.
Being raised in the South, on a farm in a tiny little community, surrounded by a large extended family, I have a love for the simple things in life–the beauty of nature and the joys of family! I’m incredibly sentimental, and have a soft spot in my heart for items that remind me of my childhood– worn and weathered vintage furniture, fabric and pottery. I’m a big fan of Summer, and my happy place is a secluded beach on the Atlantic coast of south Florida where I can spend hours searching for bits of worn sea glass and other gifts from the sea.
